Cabo San Lucas Locations and Districts: Marina view showing lighthouseThe main districts and tourist-based neighbourhoods in Cabo San Lucas are based around the coastline. Cabo San Lucas is quite unrecognisable from its days as a small fishing village, when it was regularly visited by pirates and other unsavoury characters.

The Cabo San Lucas of today is a leading, family friendly resort, with an enormous selection of hotels based around the downtown and Golden Corridor districts. Much of the action take places around Medano Beach and the Marina district, where cruises regularly depart.

Central Cabo San Lucas is divided into two main areas. The area sited directly next to the marina itself is known as the city's marina district, with the remainder being classed as the downtown district. Within downtown Cabo San Lucas, tourism is an essential part of life and this area is filled with hotels, shops and popular tourist attractions, with the Cabo San Lucas Visitor Information Centre located here should you need any help in deciding what to see or where to go.

Highlights in downtown Cabo San Lucas include the Cabo San Lucas Visitor Information Centre along the Calle Madero, the Pasado Marina de Museo fishing museum and the Museo de las Californias. The daily Mercado Mexicano is worth looking out for and a good place to purchase a souvenir, such as dyed fabrics, silver jewellery and hats. Many of the region's biggest festivities are based within the streets of downtown Cabo San Lucas, such as the Festival of San Jose each March, the Easter Festival in April, and the Day of the Dead every November.

The Medano Beach lies on the eastern side of Cabo San Lucas and has gained a strong reputation for being one of the city's foremost party districts. With an array of hotels, restaurants, bars and clubs all close to Medano Beach itself (Playa el Medano), this neighbourhood really comes to life when the sun sets. Medano Beach is considered to be one of the best family friendly beaches in Cabo San Lucas for swimming and also provides beach chairs and a good choice of water sports. Other fun attractions include bungee jumping close to the marina, glass-bottomed boat tours and the awesome Land's End arch, 'El Arco'.

Cabo San Lucas and nearby San José del Cabo are linked by a 32-km / 20-mile stretch known as the Golden Corridor. Very much an area of tourism, this upmarket district boasts an array of white sandy beaches, exceptional links golf courses and luxury hotel resorts, which have boomed ever since the 1990s. Many famous celebrities have grand holiday houses along the Golden Corridor, overlooking the coastline and within easy reach of central Cabo San Lucas. The Santa Maria Beach (Playa Santa Maria) is a good spot for snorkelling, scuba diving and general beach fun.

The Cabo San Lucas marina district is always busy and features many attractions based around the waterfront and boats. A number of excellent seafood restaurants are present here and based around the Boulevard Marina, using freshly caught fish and shrimps from the surrounding waters. The Boulevard Marina is a prominent road off Lazaro Cardenas and interconnects with many other streets. Regular sportfishing cruises depart from the marina and seasonal events are also based within this district of Cabo San Lucas, such as the Los Cabos Summer Dive Fiesta in August and the Los Cabos Billfish Tournament each October.
